La Città della Speranza
The pioneering research foundation, Città della Speranza (City of Hope), is an Institute of Paediatric Research in Padua, Italy. It is the largest paediatric disease research centre in Europe, and the national centre for the diagnosis of acute leukaemia and molecular characterisation of lymphoma and sarcoma. The foundation also coordinates national and European protocols for the diagnosis and cure of lymphoma, sarcoma, cerebral, hepatic and rare tumours. The Città della Speranza was founded in 1994, in memory of a child, Massimo, who died of leukaemia. After collecting funds from industries and private donors, a Day Hospital and research laboratories were built in the university hospital of Padua, followed by a Paediatric Emergency Room, to treat the young patients in the best possible way. In June 2012, the 17,500 sqm Institute of Paediatric Research was inaugurated, where every day, more than 400 people contribute to making the Foundation a true city of hope: doctors, researchers, nursing staff and volunteers.
The City of Hope has improved healing rates from 30% in 1994 to 80% today. It is rigorous in keeping administrative costs at 2%. For every ticket sold at the Palio of Amazons, a euro will be donated to the Foundation. For further information and donations: www.cittadellasperanza.org
